Why We Started Hayshack — and What Connects Everything We Do

We started Hayshack with a simple observation: most of the problems South African businesses bring to consultants are not technology problems. They are people and process problems that happen to involve technology.

The IT system that nobody uses properly. The cybersecurity policy that exists on paper but not in practice. The digital transformation project that stalled because the humans involved were never brought along. Technology is almost never the root cause of these situations.

Starting With How Things Actually Work

This matters for how we work. Before we recommend a tool or a platform, we ask what behaviour it needs to support. Before we assess a security posture, we look at how decisions actually get made. Before we help someone publish a book, we ask who the reader is and why they would choose this one.

The connecting thread across everything Hayshack does — consulting, cybersecurity, AI platforms, publishing — is that we are interested in how things actually work, not how they are supposed to work on paper. The gap between those two things is where most of the interesting problems live.

Why a Family Business

We are a family business, which means we have skin in the game in a way that larger consultancies do not. When we give advice, we live with the consequences in the same community as the people we advise. That accountability shapes everything.

There is a practical advantage to this. When you call us, you speak to someone who can make a decision. When we scope a project, the person who writes the proposal is the person who does the work. There is no account management layer, no handoff between sales and delivery, no dilution of accountability across departments. The buck stops with people whose names are on the door.

That matters in South Africa, where the distance between a Cape Town head office and a Johannesburg service provider can turn small problems into expensive ones. Local presence means faster response. Family ownership means the relationship you build in the first meeting is the one you keep for the next ten years.

The Different Things We Do

People sometimes ask why a single business does cybersecurity, IT consulting, AI platforms, and publishing. The answer is that these are not separate disciplines. They are the same discipline applied to different problems.

Cybersecurity is about understanding how people interact with systems and where trust breaks down. IT consulting is about designing systems that fit how organisations actually function. AI platforms are about applying automation where it genuinely helps rather than where it looks impressive. Publishing is about taking ideas that deserve an audience and making them accessible.

Each of these requires the same core skill: the willingness to look at what is actually happening before proposing what should happen. Most consultants skip that step. They arrive with the answer and spend the engagement fitting the problem to it. We prefer the slower route of understanding the problem first, because the solutions that come from it tend to actually last.

What to Expect From This Blog

We plan to use this space to share thinking that is genuinely useful rather than content for content’s sake. That means posts about real situations we encounter, practical approaches to security and IT decisions, and honest reflections on what it takes to run a technology business in South Africa. If you find it helpful, we would like to hear from you.

If you are dealing with a specific challenge — a security question, a technology decision, a book you want to publish — the conversation starts the same way. Tell us what is actually happening, and we will tell you what we think. No jargon, no sales pitch, no assuming the answer before we have understood the problem.

The South African Technology Landscape

South African businesses face a particular set of technology constraints that offshore advice rarely accounts for. Bandwidth is expensive relative to income. Power is unreliable. Skills are concentrated in a few cities. The tools that work without friction in a European data centre do not always work the same way when the connection drops twice a day and the on-site IT person is also the finance manager.

This is why we insist on understanding the environment before recommending a solution. A cloud-first strategy sounds progressive until the client is on a 10Mbps line shared across forty staff. A zero-trust security model is excellent in principle, but the implementation has to survive a network that changes latency every few hours. The best technology decision is the one that works in the actual conditions, not the one that looks best in a proposal.
