Why We Started Hayshack — and What Connects Everything We Do

We started Hayshack with a simple observation: most of the problems South African businesses bring to consultants are not technology problems. They are people and process problems that happen to involve technology.

The IT system that nobody uses properly. The cybersecurity policy that exists on paper but not in practice. The digital transformation project that stalled because the humans involved were never brought along. Technology is almost never the root cause of these situations.

This matters for how we work. Before we recommend a tool or a platform, we ask what behaviour it needs to support. Before we assess a security posture, we look at how decisions actually get made. Before we help someone publish a book, we ask who the reader is and why they would choose this one.

The connecting thread across everything Hayshack does — consulting, cybersecurity, AI platforms, publishing — is that we are interested in how things actually work, not how they are supposed to work on paper. The gap between those two things is where most of the interesting problems live.

We are a family business, which means we have skin in the game in a way that larger consultancies do not. When we give advice, we live with the consequences in the same community as the people we advise. That accountability shapes everything.

This is the first post on the Hayshack blog. Welcome — we plan to use this space to share thinking that is genuinely useful rather than content for content’s sake.
