In-House IT vs Managed Services vs Staff Augmentation: Making the Right Call
Every South African business with more than 20 staff hits the same decision point. Do we hire an IT person, do we outsource to a managed services provider, or do we do something in between? The answer depends on what you actually need, not what the salesperson in front of you is selling.
In-house IT
Hiring your own IT person gives you someone who knows your business, is there every day, and can handle anything from a broken printer to a server migration. The problem is that one person cannot do everything. They might be great at desktop support but weak on security. They might know servers but not networking. They might be excellent at their job but get hit by a bus, and then you have one person’s worth of knowledge walking out the door.
In-house IT works best when the person is senior enough to handle strategy and architecture, and the routine work (helpdesk, patching, monitoring) is outsourced. That gives you the best of both: someone who understands your business, supported by a team that handles the volume.
Managed services
A managed services provider takes responsibility for your entire environment for a fixed monthly fee. Monitoring, patching, security, support, backups. The advantage is predictability and breadth. You get a team of specialists for less than the cost of one senior hire. The disadvantage is that you lose direct control. The MSP decides how things are done, and if their service is poor, your only lever is the contract.
Managed services work best for businesses where IT is a utility, not a competitive advantage. If your business runs on standard platforms (Microsoft 365, standard accounting software, no custom applications), an MSP can run it well. If your business has bespoke systems, complex integrations, or specialised security requirements, look for an MSP with specialist depth in those areas.
Staff augmentation
Staff augmentation is the middle ground. You bring in skilled people embedded in your team, working under your direction, employed and managed by us. You get the capability without the recruitment, HR overhead, or long-term commitment. Scale up when you need more, scale down when you do not.
This works best when you have a clear idea of what needs to be done but not enough people to do it. A network engineer for a six-month infrastructure project. A security specialist for a compliance push. A helpdesk person to cover maternity leave. You know the role. We provide the person.
The honest comparison
None of these is better than the others. They solve different problems. In-house gives you loyalty and business knowledge. Managed services gives you breadth and predictability. Staff augmentation gives you flexibility and specific skills. Most businesses end up with a mix, and that is usually the right answer.
We offer both managed services and staff augmentation. We will tell you which one fits your situation, not which one pays us more. Contact us to talk through the options.
The hybrid option nobody mentions
There is a fourth option that most providers do not talk about because it does not fit neatly into a sales category. A hybrid model where routine IT is managed by an MSP, a senior in-house person handles strategy and vendor relationships, and staff augmentation fills specific skill gaps for projects.
This is what most successful mid-sized businesses end up with after trying the pure options and finding them wanting. The MSP handles the volume work, the in-house person provides business context and accountability, and the augmented staff bring specialist skills that neither the MSP nor the in-house person has.
The cost is higher than pure MSP and lower than a full in-house team. The value is that every layer is doing what it is best at, and nobody is stretched across roles they cannot fill. It requires more management attention than a single model, but it produces better results because the right people are doing the right work.
Cost comparison
In-house IT costs more than most businesses expect. Salary is the starting point, but there is recruitment, training, tools, benefits, and the cost of coverage when the person is on leave or sick. A senior IT person in South Africa costs between R450,000 and R750,000 per year, all-in. That is before the cost of the tools they need to do the job.
Managed services for a 50-person business typically range from R15,000 to R35,000 per month, depending on the scope. That gives you a team of specialists, monitoring, patching, and support, for less than the cost of one mid-level hire. The trade-off is control and responsiveness — the MSP is not sitting in your office.
Staff augmentation is priced per person per month and varies by skill level. A junior helpdesk person might be R20,000/month. A senior network engineer might be R60,000/month. You pay for the capability you need, for as long as you need it, and you can stop when the project is done.
